Please introduce yourself?

Hi my name is James Talk, im a DJ and Producer from Southampton, UK

How have the gigs been going this year. Have you played in any far out places and what gig has been the most memorable?

I’ve had some great gigs so far this year. I’ve been to China, America and im now in Australia. Highlight gigs this year included Kabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh and Spray club in Kosovo/.

You've come a long way musically since your debut single 'Eggs Are Cute', with your production style almost a million light years away from your initial work. Was this a conscious shift in direction? Would you say your work now is more reflective of what you are into musically?

Eggs are Cute was the first record I ever wrote, I was listening to a lot of melodic progressive music at the time, as well as tech house and some acid. I think the basis of my sound Is still there, big heavy bass lines, melodies and catchy riffs, but I package it slightly different now.

Like many other DJs and producers, you have your own label called Spoken Recordings What made you decide to set up the label, and what plans do you have for it over the coming months?

Spoken was set up for release my music faster as many major record labels have long waits on their release schedule. I’ve had some successful releases with Spoken and will continue to release music on it this year, but I’m also going to be offering my music to other labels too. I have just signed a new single to CR2 records for release this summer.

This year you released your first artist album. Where you pleased with how it turned out and what reaction did it get?

Personally I liked it. I thought there is some good house music on there. The album had no promotional at all, and people don’t really know its been released. People kind of find it themselves. The people who heard it liked it I guess. But its behind me now, and I’ve got plenty more music to come for 2008.

What can we look forward to production and remix wise from you over the next few months?

I’m taking on a few more remixes this year. I’m about to remix Guy J- Save Me for Bedrock records, I’ve also been busy with collaborations, one with a Southampton DJ called Ridney, another with MYNC Projects Nic Correlli, and also with Tom Budden. I’ve got a few solo tracks too.

Who or what would you cite as your biggest influences, or who has been the biggest support and advice for you as both a producer and DJ to date?

Nic Fanciulli & James Zabiela have been hugely influencial to my over the past 4 years. Offering advice and support where needed. James is really canning my music in the clubs right now. Which is such a help, when a DJ has a following like he does. Josh Wink is my biggest influence musically, he is the man!

What words of advice would you give to someone wanting to break into the world of music as a producer, and do you feel it's important to be able to create your own work without the need for assistance from a third party?

I think its so important to create music on your own, the reward is 100% greater, and you get a real sense of identity with your own productions. Everyone has their own production sound, we all hear music and sounds differently, and I think its important that this translates into your own music, and not use the ears and skills of another engineer. Tips….get good, really good at making music before you let any DJ’s or Labels hear it.

Your playing at Pacha for Mimo & Big in Ibiza records on July 11th. What can we expect?

I’m excited to play at Pacha and I’ve never been before. I guess you can expect the usual kind of thing from me, bass line drops to wet your knickers too, and acid noises to screw your face up with.

Finally, seeing as you like to Talk - any final comments you would like to add?

Thanks for the interview see you in London soon.
